PLAC Test

While an estimated 1.6 million Canadians have coronary heart disease or are living with the effects of a stroke, many don’t have the commonly recognized risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The PLAC® Test at LifeLabs can help determine if you are at risk for heart disease, ischemic stroke or myocardial infarction due to the formation and vulnerability of plaque to rupture in your vascular system.

About PLAC® Testing
Who is this test for?
The PLAC® test is a relatively new test that is ordered when physicians want to understand the vulnerability of plaque to rupture in your vascular system. This might be the right test for you if you are:

  • At intermediate or high risk for developing coronary heart disease with at least two major risk factors
45-65 years of age with one major risk factor
  • A smoker
  • diagnosed with metabolic syndrome

What is this test used for?
The PLAC® test measures serum levels of Lp-PLA2 – an enzyme that plays a role in the formation of plaque – to help your doctor determine if you are at a higher risk to develop:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Ischemic stroke
  • Myocardial infarction
